NVidia: all other 1080p options for Pine Trail cower before us
Dec 18th

It’s no secret that NVidia’s Ion platform is the way to go if you intend on doing anything 3D or high def on your netbook. Intel’s integrated graphics just won’t cut the mustard.
And while third-party hardware like Broadcom’s HD decoder can at least bring you better video playback, they won’t do anything else — something NVidia took the liberty of reminding everyone about recently.
So while a Pine Trail CPU and Broadcom decoder might make for a cheaper HD-ready package, don’t forget that you’ll be missing out on the Ion’s encoding, acceleration of CUDA-enabled apps, and 3D gaming awesomeness.
If real 3D gaming and HD video is a must for you on your netbook, stick with NVidia for now.

1.8GHz Atom just around the corner, DDR3 support on the way!
Dec 15th
According to Fudzilla, Intel will begin full-scale production of the new Atom N470 in January – which means the 1.8GHz CPUs should start arriving in netbooks some time in Q1 2010. Their post also notes the the 1.6GHz N40 is already being pushed out by Intel’s factories and should surface even sooner.
One other development worth noting is that Intel is ready to make the move to DDR3 memory on the Atom and will be adding it to the Pine Trail platform some time in 2010.
If you want the deliciously speedy ram now, of course, you can always pick up an HP Mini 311. the XP version has 1GB DDR3 built in from the get-go and beefed-up Windows 7 version
ships with 2GB.

Samsung to release a bevy of Pine Trail netbooks in January
Dec 8th

We’re all well aware of how awesome the NVidia Ion is when it comes to netbook gaming. What remains to be seen is how Intel’s Pine Trail will stack up when we finally get a look at netbooks running the new chips in January.
While I’m not fortunately enough to be onsite at the Netbook World Summit in Paris, there’s plenty of reporting going on. Among the news filtering out is that Samsung could well be the first manufacturer to produce a Pine Trail based netbook.
Netbooknews.de spoke with a Samsung rep at the event, and while he didn’t spill a lot of details he did reveal that Samsung plans on dropping an entirely new line of netbooks – all running Pine Trail – near the end of January 2010.
That’s great, now how about some demo units we can benchmark, eh Samsung?

Acer signs up for NVidia Ion 2, is a netbook coming this time?
Dec 7th

Acer has already built systems using NVidia’s Ion chips – though only in their Revo nettops. So where are the netbooks, Acer? Just around the corner perhaps?
Digitimes is reporting that Acer has placed “large orders” for the NVidia Ion 2, which provides support for the upcoming Pine Trail processor. The Ion 2 will also function more like a discrete GPU, since Pine Trail moves northbridge functions onto the CPU. On top of that, Ion 2 will carry at least double the shader units of the original – 32 at a minimum.
That should lead to even better gaming performance on netbooks, right? Right.
So how about it Acer? Can you produce a portable with the Ion this time, or are we going to have to buy from someone else?
