Possible Google Chromebook specs appear, and it’s got game!

Keep in mind, the specs you’re about to read are rumored at this point, but there’s plenty of reason to believe that the Google Chromebook will look a lot like this, according to IBTimes:

  • ARM processor and NVidia Tegra chipset
  • 2GB memory, presumably DDR2
  • 64GB SSD
  • 10.1″ 1280×720 multi-touch display
  • 802.11 wireless (N support is not specified)
  • Bluetooth
  • Webcam
  • Multi-format card reader
  • 4 or 6 cell battery
  • Price points as low as $200US

Why should this be exciting news for netbook gamers? For starters, with NVidia on board (literally) there’s every reason to believe these systems will be quite capable of running any of the hundreds of great games available for Linux with no problem. And unless there’s some kind of crazy hardware lock preventing us from doing it, we should be able to install an ARM-compatible Linux distro and get those games installed on the unexpectedly large SSD.

Even if you prefer leaving Chrome OS intact, it’s going to ship with Flash support out-of-the-box – so you’ll be able to enjoy all the delicious games on site like ArmorGames and Kongregate. There are even plenty of Javascript games being developed over at Chrome Experiments which run incredibly well in Google’s browser.

Now if we could just get our hands on Chrome-compatible browser plugins for QuakeLive and Battlefield Heroes…

Jolicloud will kick Chrome OS’s ass when it comes to gaming

jolicloud-games-sdafThere’s no point in candy-coating the lead on this one. Google Chrome OS will be hot when it debuts next year, but for anyone who enjoys gaming on their netbook it’s not going to be the right choice for a primary operating system.

Until web application (and game) designers really start working with all the artillery Google has stockpiled in the Chrome armory, native games will win the day. And you’ll need a netbook OS capable of playing those games – like Jolicloud.

I’ve only recently had time to fire up the pre-beta on my trusty Acer Aspire One, but here’s a little secret. Just like Chrome OS, Jolicloud is built on a Ubuntu base. However, it’s had a lot less of the core hacked away so you still get to utilize Linux awesomeness like apt-get and gdebi. Read the rest of this entry »
