Asus 1201NL is a single-core version of 1201N, not much cheaper
Jan 8th
Are you considering picking up an Asus 1201N with its beefy dual core Atom 330 processor? Maybe you’re a little concerned about battery life, though. That 330, after all, is intended for use in nettops, not netbooks.
You’re in luck! Asus has unveiled the Eee PC 1201NL at CES. The system is essentially the same as the 1201N, but it has an Atom 270 processor under the hood. That means you’ll get better battery life – and you’ll also be giving up a bit of straight-up CPU performance. The CPU switch should put the 1201NL in line with other Ion netbooks like the HP Mini 311 and Samsung N510.
Now, here’s the rub. Brad Linder spoke with an Asus rep and was told the retail price for the 1201NL would be around $20 or $30 less than the 1201N.
If we look at the results of Laptop Magazine’s Ion shootout and base the 1201NL’s battery life on the HP or Samsung, you’re gaining 1 hour, giving up about 200 points in PC Mark, and saving $25.
Is that a compelling combo to you? I think I’d rather just stick with the original 1201N, especially since there’s no waiting – Amazon has it in stock for $484.

Asus 1201N reviewed again, verdict: it’s frickin’ sweet.
Dec 14th

I really want to want the Asus Eee PC 1201N. I won’t be lucky enough to touch one until January – when my suppliers in Canada finally get stock. But it looks like a sweet package for portable gaming, right?
Dual-core Atom. NVidia Ion. 12.1″ 1366×768 display. HDMI. But those initial writeups didn’t sound all that encouraging. Rather, they seemed to indicate that the dual Atom didn’t make much of an impact. And if that doesn’t matter, I might as well just pick up an HP Mini 311 right now.
Hold the phone!
Blogeee.net has just posted a new hands-on, however, and I’m back to loving the idea of the 1201N. Pierre Lecourt seems rather impressed by the system, and he put it through the paces with apps I use like Photoshop and Lightroom – as well as a handful of games.
If Pierre’s impressed, well, so am I. I’ll wait until I can see a unit in person before rendering my final decision, but for now, I’m excited once again about the possibilities of dual-core Atom gaming.
Asus Eee PC 1201N gets benchmarked, comes up short
Dec 7th

Chinese site cekpc.net has gotten their hands on an Asus Eee PC 1201N, and in addition to putting up another pile of photos showing off its hotness, they’ve also produced a set of benchmarks. So how does the 1201N perform?
At stock settings (read: not overclocked), the 1201N posted PC Mark 05 scores of 1848 for the CPU, 2197 for memory, and 1425 for graphics. In 3DMark 06, the 1201N scored an overall of 1302 with a CPU score of 798.
So does that dual-core Atom processor under the hood make a difference?
It certainly doesn’t look like that way. MyHPMini forum member Astaroth posted a few days ago about his success with overlcocking the HP Mini 311 and its Ion internals, and his 3DMark scores were substantially better: 1998 CPU and 1777 overall. Granted, I’m comparing a unit at stock speeds with one that has been tweaked, but at first glance it looks like the dual-core Atom N330 doesn’t provide a big boost in horsepower.
If you’re looking for solid performance at a great price – with the added benefit of overclockabaility – you might as well head out and buy an HP Mini 311. Sure, the 1201N can probably be overclocked as well, but I have my doubts about whether it will score significantly better than the 311.
The Asus Eee PC 1201N looks hot, but is it the right time to buy?

It’s up for pre-order already at Amazon, and it’s only about a month away from shipping…But I’m left wondering – will the Asus 1201N be everything it’s cracked up to be?
Don’t get me wrong – the specs make it look like the perfect 12″ netbook for gaming. The dual-core Atom processer, the NVidia Ion graphics, Windows 7…It’s a solid mix, and at $499 it certainly seems like a competitive price to me.
Still, Pine Trail is right around the corner and models are probably going to be announced in mid-January (CES, anyone?).
So what would you do? Pre-order the 1201N now and have a fairly hot netbook in your hands in January or wait – and see how the new hardware stacks up?
