CNet tests Acer Ferrari One, says “meh”

Sure, it’s one of the best-looking netbooks around, but the big knock against most of Acer’s Ferrari offerings has been the price tag. Whatever we’re talking about – laptops or the new Ferrari One netbook – comparably equipped alternatives are always cheaper.

And in the case of the Ferrari One, you’re also locking yourself into an AMD/ATI pairing, which just isn’t competitive with Intel’s offerings for battery life. It’s also not on par with the NVidia Ion when it comes to gaming and high-def performance.

You end up, then, $600 poorer with a netbook which runs HD video slightly better than an Intel-only netbook but doesn’t have the CPU chops of a CULV or GPU kung-fu of Ion. Don’t forget, you’re also losing out on an HDMI port – something I’d expect to see on a machine that expensive.

Is it worth it? Probably not, according to CNet. Benchmarks are still in the works, but here’s what I took away from the write-up: the Ferrari One looks really nice and the keyboard is good, but the price you pay is too steep.

Personally, I’d still go with an Ion-powered netbook if you’re looking to spend big bucks. Grab an HP Mini 311 and save yourself a few dollars.

Acer Ferrari One struggles with 720P video

acer-ferrari-1-aAcer’s Ferrari One might be one of the best-looking thin and light notebooks around, but it’s starting to look like that beauty is only bezel deep.

Laptop Magazine has posted a hands-on video and shared their initial thoughts on the $600 machine. There’s a five-second spot in the video which I found cringeworthy.

The Ferrari One stuttered through 720p video playback like a nervous schoolboy – witness it yourself around the 1:30 mark of the video demo. While high-def video might not be a deal breaker for me personally, I’d expect any system at this price point to be able to handle playback without breaking a sweat.

Hey, those Ion-packing Lenovo S12s are on sale right now…You could always pick up one of them for a few bucks less and use the cash you save to buy a can of glossy red spray paint.

Uber-hot Acer Ferrari One hits Amazon in the U.S.

acer-ferrrari-oneI’m not sure I’ll ever be able to afford one of their cars – but the sweet Ferrari One from Acer is definitely something I would consider purchasing. Sure, it’s a little pricey – but there’s no denying this thing is a real looker.

It’s got the fit and finish typical of other Acer Ferrari models, all crammed into an 12″ package. In case you’re not familiar with the specs, here’s a look at what $599.99 gets you over at Amazon.com:

  • 11.6” 1366 x 768 display
  • 1.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 L310 CPU
  • ATI Radeon HD 3200 video
  • 4GB DDR2 memory
  • 250GB 5400RPM HDD
  • 802.11b/g/n wireless
  • 6-cell 5600mAh Battery
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

One letdown with the Ferrari One: no HDMI output. That’s surprising since at this price point just about every other manufacturer includes high-def output.
